More Information
Grangehurst Pinotage 2012 is a distinctive, richly flavoured South African red from the celebrated Stellenbosch wine region. Made by the traditional, hands-on approach of Grangehurst, this vintage combines the characteristic depth of Pinotage with the added complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sourced from a low-yielding bush-vine vineyard in the Helderberg, approximately five kilometres from the coast, the wine benefits from the cooling influence of summer sea breezes from False Bay. The result is a concentrated and expressive red, bringing together ripe red-berry and plum fruit with layers of vanilla, oak and spice. The 2012 blend comprises 89% Pinotage and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. Following fermentation in open tanks, the wine spent an average of 20 months in small French and American oak barrels, developing a full palate and smooth yet robust tannins. A rewarding choice for lovers of mature, characterful reds, Grangehurst Pinotage 2012 is an excellent match for richly flavoured dishes, from South African bobotie and springbok pie to seared tuna and slow-cooked meats.Grangehurst Pinotage 2012 displays a deep ruby-garnet colour, with an inviting bouquet of ripe red berries and plums layered with vanilla, oak and warming spice. Grangehurst is a small, independent winery in Stellenbosch, South Africa, founded by winemaker Jeremy Walker in 1992. Its philosophy is summed up by three words: handcrafted, traditional and unhurried. The estate is known for its carefully made, limited-production wines and an approach that favours patience and individual attention in the cellar.
The 2012 Pinotage reflects this philosophy. Its grapes came from a bush-vine vineyard in the Helderberg, planted in 1994. The vineyard’s proximity to False Bay means that cooling summer sea breezes help moderate the warm Stellenbosch climate and support the development of concentrated fruit with freshness.
Grangehurst uses traditional open-tank fermentation, frequent manual punch-downs and basket pressing. The wine is then matured in small oak barrels before blending and bottling. This thoughtful process gives the Pinotage its depth, structure and distinctive combination of fruit, oak and spice.
